About NEPA: The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) recognizes that federal projects can have a significant impact on the environment. Using the NEPA process, agencies are required to determine if their proposed actions have significant environmental effects and to consider the environmental and related social and economic effects of their proposed actions. The NEPA process begins with an Environmental Assessment (EA) unless the proposed action is known to have minor impacts (Categorical Exclusion) or known to have significant environmental effects (Environmental Impact Statement).
